Product Safety & Use Notice
Last updated: May 17, 2026
The Short Version
Our products are crafted with both natural and synthetic ingredients, all carefully selected for performance. Like every cosmetic product on the market — drugstore, luxury, or artisan — any ingredient can cause a reaction in some individuals. Before first use of any Outlaws & Gents product:
- Read the full ingredient list on the product page or packaging
- Patch test on the inside of your forearm or behind your ear, leave 24 hours
- If no reaction, proceed with normal use
- If any irritation occurs at any time, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare professional if symptoms are severe or persist
By using our products, you acknowledge that you've read this notice, understand the risks, and accept full responsibility for your use of the products.
Why we publish this notice
Most personal care brands bury this in their Terms of Service. We're publishing it on its own page because it matters. We use real ingredients — essential oils, plant butters, nut oils, beeswax, modern fixatives — and any of them can cause an allergic or sensitivity reaction in some individuals. We want you to know what's in our products and how to use them safely.
This page complements (and is incorporated by reference into) our Terms of Service.
What's in our products
We use a deliberate mix of natural and synthetic ingredients chosen for what each does best.
Common natural ingredients across our line
- Plant-derived oils: Argan, sweet almond, meadowfoam seed, hemp seed
- Plant butters: Shea butter, mango butter
- Natural waxes: Beeswax, candelilla wax, carnauba wax
- Essential oils: Sweet orange, pine, tea tree, clove, vanilla, lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, and others depending on scent variant
Synthetic ingredients (where they outperform natural alternatives)
- Hair styling fixatives in our pomade and hair cream — modern polymers that hold hair shape and wash out clean without residue
- Preservation systems in some products to ensure shelf stability
Common allergen and sensitivity considerations
If any of the following apply to you, review ingredient lists carefully or consult a dermatologist before using our products:
Tree nut allergies
Some of our oils are nut-derived (argan, sweet almond). If you have a tree nut allergy — even a mild one — these products may cause a reaction.
Essential oil sensitivities
Essential oils are concentrated plant compounds. Even highly diluted essential oils can cause skin reactions in sensitive individuals. Specific essential oils with higher reaction rates include tea tree, peppermint, clove, and citrus oils.
Bee product allergies
Some of our products contain beeswax. Avoid if you have a known bee or bee-product allergy.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Several essential oils used in cosmetics are not recommended during pregnancy or active breastfeeding. Consult your doctor before use during pregnancy or while nursing.
Skin conditions
If you have eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, rosacea, contact dermatitis, or any other active skin condition, consult a dermatologist before using grooming products on affected areas.
Recent procedures
Avoid use on skin that's been recently sunburned, waxed, shaved, lasered, microneedled, chemically peeled, or otherwise treated until the skin has fully healed.
How to patch test
A patch test takes 5 minutes and prevents most allergic surprises.
- Choose a discreet location — the inside of your forearm or behind your ear works well
- Apply a small amount of the product (about the size of a pea)
- Leave it alone for 24 hours — don't wash the area
- Check the test area at 24 hours and again at 48 hours
Look for: redness, raised bumps, itching, burning, peeling, swelling, or any other unusual sensation.
If anything looks or feels off, do not use the product on a larger area. Discontinue use entirely. If the reaction is severe or persists, consult a licensed healthcare professional or dermatologist.
If you experience an adverse reaction
Mild reactions (slight redness or itching)
Discontinue use. Wash the affected area with mild soap and cool water. Symptoms typically resolve within 24-48 hours. If they don't, see a healthcare provider.
Moderate reactions (rash, sustained redness, swelling, blistering)
Discontinue use immediately. Wash the area thoroughly. Apply a cool compress. Consider an over-the-counter antihistamine or hydrocortisone cream. See a healthcare provider if symptoms persist beyond 48 hours or worsen.
Severe reactions (difficulty breathing, throat swelling, widespread hives, dizziness, loss of consciousness)
Call 911 or seek emergency medical care immediately. Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) can be life-threatening and require immediate medical intervention.
Let us know
If you experience a reaction, we'd appreciate you letting us know at orders@outlawsandgents.com so we can improve our formulations. This is voluntary — your priority should be seeking appropriate medical care for any severe or persistent reaction.
Use guidelines by product category
Hair styling products (Pomade, Hair Cream, Texture Powder where applicable)
- For use on scalp hair and beard hair only
- Avoid eyes; rinse with water if contact occurs
- Wash out with shampoo at end of day
Beard products (Beard Oil, Beard Balm, Beard Body Butter)
- NEVER apply to skin that is not fully healed. This means no scabs, no cuts, no open wounds, no scaling, no flaking, no active acne, no recent shaving irritation, no broken skin of any kind. Fully healed skin only — no exceptions.
- The Beard Body Butter is multi-use for fully healed skin, including fully healed tattoos — see the next section.
Tattoo and tattooed-skin use (Beard Body Butter and similar multi-use butters)
- NEVER apply to skin that is not fully healed. This includes fresh tattoos, healing tattoos, scabbed tattoos, flaking tattoos, peeling tattoos, or tattoos at any stage of the healing process. Do not use until the tattooed area is completely, fully healed — no scabbing, no scaling, no flaking, no broken skin of any kind.
- For fresh tattoos, follow your tattoo artist's specific aftercare instructions. Our products are not intended for use during the tattoo healing process.
- Once the tattoo is fully healed (typically several weeks after the tattoo session, but timing varies by individual and by tattoo), our Beard Body Butter and similar products may be applied to support long-term skin and ink condition.
- If you are unsure whether your tattoo is fully healed, do not apply our products. Consult your tattoo artist or a dermatologist.
What we do not recommend
- Internal use: Never. Our products are for external use only.
- On infants or young children: Our products are formulated for adult use. Do not apply to children under 12.
- As a substitute for medical treatment: Our products are cosmetics, not medications.

If a pet ingests a product, contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435.
